I presumed the Works with core Taxonomy module and CCK Taxonomy module to mean active tags works with content taxonomy but I am unable to get it working.
Could you please tell me whether this does work with content taxonomy and if so how do I get it to work??

Yes it does. Currently, you have to use the 6.x-1.x-dev version of content_taxonomy until the next stable release is made. After using the latest version you will find that a checkbox will appear inside your cck autocomplete field settings that will allow you to use the AT style widget.
